Concrete Patios
When people call us at Southern Aluminum Installations about building a new sunroom, one of the first questions they have is about the type of foundation that is required. Many people already have a concrete patio and would like to convert it into the foundation for the sunroom but aren’t sure if this is possible.
Lucky for them, a concrete patio can be a great start for a sunroom foundation, as long as it’s level and in good shape. Cracks or other damage need to be repaired first. Most patios are only about 4″ thick, about the same as a sidewalk, so your slab may need added support before it can carry the weight of a sunroom. We’ll inspect your patio and let you know what it needs.
Wooden Decks
An existing wooden deck is also an option for a sunroom foundation. However, not all decks are strong enough to hold up the weight of a sunroom, so you’ll need to have the deck fully inspected before beginning construction.
Crawl Spaces
Crawl spaces are also excellent options for sunroom foundations. Crawl spaces flow seamlessly with your home’s existing design, leave plenty of room for plumbing, wiring, and ductwork, and offer insulation that the other foundation types can’t match. However, crawl spaces are expensive and not an option for budget sunrooms.
