Many people already have a concrete patio and would like to convert it into the foundation for the sunroom but aren’t sure if this is possible.

Lucky for them, a concrete patio is a great start for a sunroom foundation, assuming it is level and in good shape. However, patios are usually only about 4” thick, which is about the same as a sidewalk. For your patio to be a good foundation for your sunroom, it’s very likely that more concrete will need to be added on top to make it strong and stable enough to support the weight of a sunroom.

Wooden Decks

An existing wooden deck is also an option for a sunroom foundation. However, not all decks are strong enough to hold up the weight of a sunroom, so you’ll need to have the deck fully inspected before beginning construction.

Crawl Spaces

Crawl spaces are also excellent options for sunroom foundations. Crawl spaces flow seamlessly with your home’s existing design, leave plenty of room for plumbing, wiring, and ductwork, and offer insulation that the other foundation types can’t match. However, crawl spaces are expensive and not an option for budget sunrooms.
